My Kindergarten Baby!

Today my five-year old has "meet the teacher night" at school. She starts school on Monday and is so excited. I must admit I am a little nervous about it. This is our first child starting school and my first baby, so it's very sentimental for me. I think I am being a little dramatic, so I am trying not to make my daughter feel nervous about it. I have been reminiscing about the days she was just a little infant. Cradled in my arms and what my mom said is so true, they grow too fast, so enjoy each moment! I have been talking with my daughter, I told her what my first day was like as much as I could remember and what to do in certain situations.
I asked her how she felt about starting school, her response was, "I am grateful for the things I have for school, that daddy and mommy bought me nice things to use, and I am grateful for my family. And I think that the first day will be a good day and that it will be fun. Don't worry I am not scared mommy!"

I guess after a reply like that how could I feel nervous, when she is so strong, thankful and positive! I think I can add this to another lesson learned from my kids!

Here are some great tips I got from this website: http://www.education.gov.ab.ca/parents/tips.asp#Preparing

  1. Talk About It. Encourage your child to share his or her feelings. Talk about the excitement of starting at a new school, and discuss any concerns your child might have.

  2. Take a School Tour. Call the school and arrange to tour the school with your child. Help your child find their way around the school and the location of their classroom and the bathroom. If possible, meet the teacher and principal.

  3. Make a New Friend. If possible, introduce your child to a classmate before the first day of school.

Also a few weeks ago I went to the library and checked out a few books that have helped prepare her for Kindergarten:
